A fountain with bishops and cardinals

Fountain Saint-Sulpice fountain

On the Saint-Sulpice square, near the beautiful church, is the monumental fountain raised by Louis Visconti in 1845.

Four statues, for four great men: Bossuet, bishop of Meaux, Fénelon, bishop of Cambrai, Massillon, bishop of Clermont and Fléchier, bishop of Nîmes.

That’s why the fountain was also known as the “Four bishops' fountain”! Another fountain's nickname is “fountain of four points of the compass”: in French, fontaine des quatre points cardinaux. Well? Cruel irony, none of those men were appointed cardinals!
