Just imagine a fire, a real blaze which damaged the castle in August 1792, when the Revolution came in Rupt village... From that tragedy remain the high keep and the small castle (16th century).
Founded in the 12th century, the fortress of Rupt belonged to Guy de Pesmes in 1160.
The last member of this family died out in 1467 and the castle fell to the Goux family then in 1539 to Clermont family. Jean-Baptiste de Clermont sold it to the general farmer Frimod du Fort, in 1748, just before the demolition ordered by cardinal Richelieu.
Few years later... well, you know what happened during the Revolution...
When Albert Grimod d'Orsay inherited Rupt in the beginning of the 20th century, he raised a small detached house. He liked to come here to spend few days. The 5 floors keep, with nice vaulted rooms is still here, but also the small castle built by Goux family, with its pepper-box roof...
