The current church (Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres, "Our-Lady-of-the-Edge-of-the-World") dates back to the end of the 10th century.
Primitively, there was a small chapel in the 9th century, raised on the foundations of an old oratory put up by saint Véronique.
The legend says this lady came back in France from Jerusalem, in a boat, with saint Martial.
But the boat wreck in Aquitaine, near our church! The two saints had a narrow escape, and thanked Virgin Mary who saved them from drowning.
Then Véronique founded our church and put a relic inside, drops of Virgin Mary's breast milk. The name of the little city of Soulac came from here, solum lac in Latin means "Virgin's milk"!
Lots of pilgrims came here to see those relics and Véronique's grave, in the Middle Age. From that time, the basilica began to be stuck in the sand! Because it was raised on dunes...
