Legend Parish church Saint-Thomas church in Landerneau

Above the porch, we notice saint Eloi’s statue with a moon crescent. A moon? Well, it gave the French expression, lune de Landerneau, "Landerneau’s moon"...

Prince de Rohan was invited one day by the king in Versailles castle. A great honour!

This sir wore a moon and a sun on his blazon. They said the king was very upset because the sun was his own symbol, he was the Sun King and he and only he was allowed to have a sun on his coat of arms...

Rohan had to remove his own sun... When he came back in Landerneau, people sighed: the king only left them the moon...

A variant story says sir de Rohan was in Versailles with other courtiers, strolling in the garden.

All day long, the Breton lord became blasé on everything...

Someone showed the moon: "Look at that beauty!" swooned those ladies. Rohan contemptuously answered the moon was way much bigger in Landerneau...
