The construction of this stronghold on its rocky spur dates back to the 13th century, ordered by the first dauphins of Viennois.

In the 17th century, Vauban suggested a plan to extend and reinforce it. The famous French architect described the stronghold as "one of the most advance royal place towards the Piedmont, which could be able to bother Barbets (protestants of this area)".
