A little history of Gouin towhouse

Town house Gouin towhouse

This beautiful house owns its name from the family Gouïn, merchants in the 18th century from Brittany (near Rennes).

But this mansion dates back to the 15th century... It belonged in the Renaissance period to René Gardette, a rich bourgeois, mayor of Tours.

The legend says it was Jean Xaincoings, famous treasurer Jacques Cœur's friend, who raised the house in 1440...

Anyway, bombings in 1944 during World War II destroyed the house: it was entirely rebuilt few years later.

Nowadays, this mansion is the headquarters of the Touraine's Archaeological Society: it houses a museum dedicated to regional arts.
