In this quiet city, we can see vestiges of the fortifications. They raised them from the 14th century in order to protect the city, a very important place during the Middle-Ages.
The oldest gate is Saint-Gilles' one (14th century), a square tower flanked by machicolations with an entrance in the middle.
Notre-Dame and Villeneuve gates were re-raised circa 1550.
You’ll recognize the first one with its bridge and its chapel Notre-Dame-des-Grâces (1510). Flanked by two big round towers, a blazon with popes coat of arms used to decorate it... but it was destroyed during the Revolution.
