A little history of Saussay castle

In the beginning of the 17th century, Laurent de Gaumont, lord of Saussay, raised a castle on the foundation of an old fortress which dates back to 1328.
Well, a castle... you bet! It was more like a small detached house, the one you'll see on the left of the castle, during your visit.
His grandson Jean de Gaumont built the Classical detached house on the right in the reign of Louis XIV. So, we have two buildings face to face, surrounded by moats... and a nice park!
In the 18th century, the castle fell to several owners, by marriage: Bragelone, Canclaux. Jean-Baptiste Canclaux destroyed the main building in 1740 and raised the two small detached house at the entrance.
Landscaped garden was laid out in 1830, in order to replace the old formal garden. In the 19th century, the Saussay fell to Bourbon-Busset family.
