The harbour is very old: Sète was born in the 17th century, raised by Louis XIV minister, Colbert, who wanted to have a harbour here, on the Mediterranean sea. The engineer who built the canal du Midi, Pierre-Paul Riquet, laid down the first stone of the harbour in 1666.
