Aimeric de Belenoi, the troubadour from Lesparre

A troubadour was born in the castle! Aimeric de Belenoi, in 1216.

First a monk, then jongleur and troubadour.

He went in Chambéry and Evian and sojourned in castles belonging to the house of Savoy.

There, he praised the beauty of the noble lady Gentils de Rieux, in his poems…

A little bit too much! Because the husband get angry and Aimeric had to leave, with regrets…

Then, he moved in Aix-en-Provence at the court of Raymond-Bérenger.

There, he met his wife, the pretty Béatrice… love at first sight!

He wrote:

« Quand je suis arrivé ici, sa grande beauté et sa sagesse m'ont laissé penser que je ne pourrai jamais la conquérir. Son mérite est si grand que je n'ose pas lui faire voir l'amour qui me pénètre malgré moi ; je n'attends rien en retour.

Il me suffit de savoir qu'elle connaisse mes sentiments ; je l'aime avec un tel respect que je n'ose même pas la regarder, qu'elle me voie ou pas. Mais quand elle tourne ses yeux vers moi, si je la regardais, je pourrai mourir sur l'instant. »

But Aimeric de Belenoi also wept for a dear friend, Nuno Sanchez, in his lament Nulhs hom en res no falh:

« Hélas ! Pourquoi est-il condamné à vivre, celui qui sent sa douleur s’accroitre chaque jour ! Tous mes plaisirs sont changés en deuil par un chagrin cruel qui s’est fixé dans mon cœur... »

Then, Aimeric went into exile in Castile: he died in Catalonia in 1242, at the king of Castile’s court.
