Chambéry ducal castle Castle

An old medieval stronghold, mentioned since 1057... Chambéry castle was owned, at the end of the 13th century, by the mighty dukes of Savoie, with count Amédée V. Immediately, he launched a big building site in order to extend the old keep. So a surrounding wall was raised, then several buildings as for instance the Chambre des Comptes. Emperor's bedroom and Parliaments room were also created.

But it was nothing compared to Amédée VIII's fitting out! The 19th duke of Savoie transformed the castle into a royal residence... He raised the Gothic Holy Chapel between 1408 and 1430, but also the big tower, to the north of the castle. His son Louis I built the square tower dedicated to Archives in 1450.

But several disasters took place in the castle... A fire destroyed the Holy Chapel in 1532, then rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1743, another fire damaged apartments, replaced by a Neoclassical building in 1775. But our palace was a phoenix! It reborn and was rebuilt between 1850 and 1870... Fell to the family of Savoie, after Savoie was annexed by France, the prefecture moved in our castle.
