Notre-Dame's dome fresco: absolute hell for the painter

Cathedral Accident Notre-Dame cathedral in Nancy

Don't forget the dome's paintings, by Claude Jacquard! We have here characters from the Old and New Testament, on a sky.

The book L'Histoire de Nancy by Charles Pfister, said when this fresco was completed, duchess of Lorraine Elisabeth-Charlotte was surprised... unpleasantly surprised!

She said: "Jacquard promised me an opened sky, but all I see is Hell"!

Ashamed, hurt, Jacquard threw himself into empty space in July 1736, from his scaffolding... He cracked his head when he fell.
