Cathedral Crusades Sainte-Marie cathedral in Oloron

The first cathedral in Oloron was destroyed by the Saracens in the 8th century, then rebuilt in 1080 by viscount of Béarn Gaston IV, nicknamed “the Crusader”.

The ancestor of handsome Gaston Phébus, we met in his castles of Montaner and Mauvezin...

Gaston IV was a brave and proud knight, we found next to Godefroy of Bouillon and his buddies Templars, fighting in the Holy Land: battle of Antioch, siege of Jerusalem…

He came back in France, and he raised hospitals for poor people and monasteries on the road to Compostela, then left in Southern Spain, to fight the Moors.
