Charles of Bourbon! King François I's famous constable, who finally entered emperor Charles the Fifth’s service, the enemy! A treason, so he was exiled.
Meanwhile, he invaded Provence in August 1524 and entered as a victor in Aix, where he became count of Provence.
When Charles of Bourbon entered the city, the terror came: every man and woman had to wave him! Everyone complied, except one guy... Bourbon hung him on one of the three "elm trees" (ormeaux) on the square.
At the end of the war, they cut this accursed tree. The two other elms, which were very old, were replaced by plane trees at the end of the 19th century.
