Founded in the 10th century, the castle looked like a square keep surrounded by big walls pierced with loopholes. At that time, there were many Franks and Burgundians' invasions, so... they'd better protect them!

A deep well in the courtyard allowed them to bring water from the river... here, we could endure a very long siege!

When king of France Louis XI besieged Franche-Comté, he failed his siege of Champlitte..? King's troops quickly surrendered... And Champlitte knew many assaults in its history: the Spanish, the Normans, the Saracens, the Burgundians and the English...
