Gardens in Sassy castle

Garden Castle Sassy castle

This nice brick and stone castle located near Argentan houses beautiful gardens.

The story began in the beginning of the 18th century, when Jacques de Tirmois, councillor at the parliament of Normandy, owned the estate.

This one fell to the Germigny family, by marriage, and they rebuilt the current caste in 1760; they only kept, from the former castle, the small detached houses at the entrance.

Building work stopped with the French Revolution, and the castle was finished in 1817, thanks to the new owner, marquis d'Ommoy: this man bought woods and ponds in the neighbourhood, extended the estate.

In 1850, Sassy fell to the duke de Pasquier, who gave it to his nephew, the duke d'Audiffret-Pasquier. He added lateral wings in order to house his library (a collection of 20 000 precious books!).

The beautiful gardens dates back to the 20th century, laid out by Achille Duchêne, founded on the former vegetable garden.

Duchêne! Do you know him? He was a great landscape gardener at the end of the 19th century, who worked on parks such as Breteuil, Bouges, Champs-sur-Marne or La Lorie...
