Chapel Natural disaster Miracle Grey Penitents chapel in Avignon

A miracle happened in 1433: on November 29th, rivers Rhône, Durance and Sorgue flooded Avignon lower city. A huge flood!

On November 30th, water arrived at the chapel doors... on the next morning, Penitents discovered the water had split (like for Moses), so the chapel stayed dry!

On December 1th, water withdrew. Objects and books in the chapel were dry.

Grey Penitents decided to celebrate this miracle on November 30th, each year.
