Rue des Tanneurs is an old street from Orléans first medieval wall. It was restored and it became a nice pedestrian precinct, which kept the sinuous plan specific to medieval streets.
The name's street comes from jobs as tanners and butchers. They needed water in abundance; they found it in the river Loire nearby and even threw away their waste in this water.
Tanning is known in Orléans since the 14th and 15th centuries. The peak was reached in the 18th century...
