Fortification La Garde-Guérin ramparts

The old castle of la Garde-Guérin used to command the former road which linked Languedoc to Auvergne.

In the 10th century, bishops of Mende decided, in order to get rid of thieves who robbed travelers, to set up a kind of guardroom.

Noblemen called pariers settled in the little city, fortifying it, putting up a fortress and a keep. They get huge incomes: those gentlemen were perfectly well organized, escorting each traveler in middle of this disreputable area and getting a toll from them!
